The first thing I do when I start a new website project is go check out what others are doing in the space. It’s the perfect way to research, learn, and get inspired!

Today, I’m going to show you 18 of my favorite church websites built with Squarespace. Dive into each one to see how they are making the most of all the Squarespace features and start writing down some ideas for your own church website. These are real church website examples that you can use to launch a new site or make your current one even better!

The best church websites are more than features and design. It’s also about how churches organize and present their content to reach new visitors and connect with current members. As you look through all these beautiful designs, think about how they’ve set up their pages, organized their navigation, and write headlines to make a lasting impression!

Grove Church

Grove Church has all the elements of a minimalistic ministry website. It’s clean design uses great photography, bold fonts, and plenty of “white space”. It’s proof that you don’t need to overthink it. In fact, it’s their simple approach (a design without all the fluff and clutter) that actually brings more clarity to their mission to “see an end of spectator Christianity.”

Is Squarespace right for your church?

Now that you’ve seen some real church websites rocking Squarespace, let’s figure out if it’s the best church website solution for your specific ministry. Here’s 3 really good things you should know about Squarespace.

Squarespace just works

If your ministry moves as fast as mine does, you don’t have time to stop and fix things. Thankfully, Squarespace does all the heavy lifting for you. It’s easy to use and adding features like a blog or an event calendar is practically 1 click away. And when most systems get messy in smaller devices, Squarespace just works no matter which device your visitors are using. From Androids to iPads, your content will look great without any extra work!

Squarespace is affordable

When you consider all of your options, Squarespace offers the biggest bang for your buck. In my recent comparison, Squarespace was cheaper than both a comparable self-hosted WordPress setup and Wix.

Website Builder Cost Comparison

*All plans compared at annual cost. WordPress costs based on comprable theme and plugins from churchthemes.com + Monthly hosting with Flywheel

In the cost comparison graph above, WordPress costs $199 upfront (for churchthemes.com package) and $15 a month for Flywheel hosting. The Wix’s Combo plan, which removes ads and includes a free domain for 1 year is $156 per year. The Squarespace Personal plan which includes a free domain for 1 year is $16 per month or $144 when paid annually.

Squarespace is actually fun to use

This may not be on your radar, but for someone who builds websites ever day, I can tell you that enjoying your website platform is half the battle. I would argue anyone on your team will be able to use Squarespace after a day or two of practice. The drag-and-drop builder is intuitive and just fun to play with.

As a bonus, Squarespace offers built in stock photography through Unsplash, which means no more hunting around websites for the right event or blog image. You can look through thousands of images right there while you work inside of the builder.

What no one else is telling you about Squarespace

Like all other website builders, Squarespace can’t do it all. And this wouldn’t be a fair review if I didn’t tell you the potential drawbacks of using Squarespace for your church.

Yes, it comes with tons of amazing features like events, blogs, and drag-and-drop page sections, but it’s meant to work over a broad spectrum of businesses and organizations. This means that some of the features aren’t as robust as you may like.

Events and limitations

It’s not uncommon to want a church calendar and community events listed on your website. Thankfully, Squarespace has a pretty sweet calendar and event solution. You can create an event page and even drop related events on specific pages throughout your site. Let’s say you have a kids page and want to add a section to display all the upcoming kid events. No problem! Just drop an event summary block in and select the kids category. Now every time you add a new kid event, it will show up on the main calendar and on the kids page!

But what happens if you want to repeat an event every week? Well - as of now - you can’t set events to repeat automatically, which can be a real bummer if you have a bible study that meets every Tuesday at 7pm. You’ll have to manually duplicate the event and change the date for each week. It’s not the end of the world, but man, that’s a feature that could really save you some time!

Lack of Squarespace church templates

Just like Squarespace features, templates are meant to work for a wide variety of businesses, bloggers, and organizations. This means there’s no default church template to start with. You’ll have to customize a general business template to make it work for your ministry. The trade off is that every Squarespace plan includes a free template and like we’ve discussed, their templates are easy to use and fun. So there’s no harm in messing around with one to see what you can create.

But what if there was a faster way to get your church website built with Squarespace?

Introducing Church Squarespace Templates

For those who want to speed up the process or level up their church website design, I’ve created church Squarespace templates that come with prebuilt ministry features for all your groups, sermons, and event pages! Each template comes with over 10 pages organized and styled for you. All that’s left is swapping in your text, adding images, and launching!
